Youth Database Initiative – A Desperate Attempt to Mask Failure

The recent announcement by the administration of Gov. Agbu Kefas on the launch of a youth database and profiling initiative in Taraba State is, at best, a cosmetic exercise and, at worst, a calculated attempt to further sideline the very youth it claims to empower.

While the government presents this initiative as a forward thinking step toward development, many young people across the state see it for what it truly represents  a desperate move to continue silencing their voices under the guise of data-driven governance. After years of unfulfilled promises, the sudden rush to profile the youth raises serious concerns about intent, sincerity, and timing.

A government genuinely committed to youth development would not be starting with data collection at this stage. It would have long been deeply engaged in tangible empowerment like creating jobs, supporting innovation, investing in education, and building platforms for youth participation in governance. Instead, what we are witnessing is a pattern of delay, diversion, and deflection.

It must be clearly stated: a failed system remains a failed system, no matter how it is repackaged or presented. No amount of profiling or database creation can substitute for real, measurable progress in the lives of young people.

Even more troubling is the growing perception that those youths who have been previously engaged by the system are increasingly being silenced and reduced to mere handkerchiefs and disposable tools, only relevant when needed for political optics and discarded thereafter. This culture of tokenism and suppression undermines trust and further alienates a generation already grappling with limited opportunities.

The youth of Taraba State do not need to be studied  they need to be heard. They do not need more promises  they need action. They do not need profiling all they need is empowerment.

Anything short of this is simply another chapter in a long history of missed opportunities and misplaced priorities.
