Day 6: Family Bonds – What I've Learned From Family by Phekwalayan

Day 6: Family Bonds – What I've Learned From Family

The smallest unit of our society is the family. Family is everything. And no, I’m not going with the narrow dictionary definition that confines family to only those tied by blood. Over time, I’ve come to understand deeply that while blood is thicker than water, family transcends biology. It's about those who show up, those who stay, and those who hold space for you when the world doesn't.

There have been moments in my life when I paused and asked myself, “If not for my family, how would I have survived this?” In times of confusion, when I’m stuck with complex decisions, especially the life-altering ones, no matter how confident or skilled I think I am, I always run to my sisters. Their insights help me see clearer, think deeper, and choose better. Their presence alone reminds me that I'm not alone in the journey.

One thing I’ve noticed about our generation is the slow drift from the value of real connection. We toss around independence and self-sufficiency, but when life hits hard, the question remains: Who’s going to sit by your bedside when you’re sick? It will always be family, the real ride-or-die who will carry your burdens without ever complaining about the weight. That’s the kind of wealth no amount of money can match.

Today happens to be Children's Day, and I spent it reminiscing about my childhood how our parents did their best to give us the greatest start in life. They sent us to the best schools they could afford (Command Secondary Schools are the best, argue with your phone 🤌🏾🙂‍↕️🙂‍↔️). More than raising us as their children, they taught us unity: that as brothers and sisters standing together, there's no obstacle we cannot conquer. And most importantly, they taught us that love, pure, enduring love, is the greatest inheritance.

As I reflect today, I realize just how blessed I am. My family may not fit the textbook image of perfection, but we have what truly matters: love. And that… that is more than enough.
