Day 9: Career and Work Life – Wins, Pivots, Burnouts, and Dreams by Phekwalayan

Day 9: Career and Work Life – Wins, Pivots, Burnouts, and Dreams

I’ve never had a single, clear-cut career path, but I’ve consistently shown up, using every skill I’ve learned over the years to the best of my ability. My journey has been far from conventional, but it’s been meaningful.

From working as a tech support officer at a tech company in Jalingo, to taking on other significant roles like serving as the team lead for IT support and network administration at the PDP Situation Room Jalingo Taraba state during the 2023 elections, each role has stretched me in different ways. That election period was intense. I still remember the sleepless nights during the presidential elections, me, Affos, and Jeremy, trying to stay awake by playing music and dancing just to keep our spirits up. It was exhausting, yet fulfilling. We were part of something bigger than ourselves, and our efforts contributed to the victory of the current governor. (Yes I said it 😏)

Another chapter I hold dearly was my NYSC year in Kebbi State, where I served as a graduate assistant lecturer. It wasn’t as draining as the election gig, but it carried a different kind of weight, the responsibility of shaping young minds. I had the privilege to teach, mentor, and inspire students, and that experience left a lasting imprint on me. It felt like purpose.

As I reflect tonight, I realize that my current reality might be someone else’s dream. That thought alone fuels me. It’s a reminder that despite the pivots, burnouts, and uncertainties, I’ve made progress. I’ve grown. And I’m still grinding, not just to survive, but to build a life that aligns with the dreams I once had, and maybe even dreams I’ve yet to dream.

So here’s to the journey, imperfect, winding, but deeply mine. And for that, I am grateful.
